Abstract
The article is devoted to the Savior Cathedral in Klyazma, Moscow region, as a monument of the neo-Russian architecture style, probably the most underrated one of such temples built in the early XX century. This year, the temple celebrates the 110th anniversary of of construction and 20 years of consecration in the name of “the Holy Image of the Savior Not Made by Hands” after restoration. The article discusses the characteristic artistic solutions and differences from other temples built in the neo-Russian style. The research topic is the Neo-Russian style in the church architecture of the Art Nouveau era. The working hypothesis is that the Church of the Holy Image of the Savior Not Made by Hands in Klyazma is one of the best examples of the Neo-Russian style in church architecture of the early XX century, both in terms of its aesthetic advantages (proportions, shaping, color solutions), inspiring with the Moscow architecture of the XIV–XVI centuries and in terms of an innovative approach to construction technologies as it is the first church in Russia built entirely of reinforced concrete. The main artistic technique of Art Nouveau architecture was stylization, which involved changing the proportions of the original source to enhance figurative expressiveness, including exaggerated forms, scale play, and hyperbolization which was used by the author of the temple sketch, S. I. Vashkov, but at the same time it was possible to achieve more harmonious proportions in comparison with other famous temples in the Neo-Russian style. The unique temple individuality is given by an unusual vault and majolica panels made at the Butyrsky majolica factory “Abramtsevo” by S. I. Mamontov.
