Abstract

Folk theatres are a phenomenon of the Soviet state cultural policy. Established in the 1950s, they were an important part of the Soviet theatrical life, significantly influencing the development of amateur art. As part of the implementation of the “Strategy for Cultural Policy of the Russian Federation,” a revival of these groups is currently underway, both in Russia and in the Far East. Folk theatres were not only Russian but also national. In the Far East region in the second half of the 20th century, two national folk theatres existed. They were the Jewish Folk Theater in Birobidzhan and the Nanai Folk Theater in the village of Naikhin. Their work reflected not only the specific nature of folk theatres but also the national flavor inherent in each performance. Thanks to talented directors and a well-chosen cast, the Jewish Folk Theatre survived until the early 1990s. The Nanai Folk Theatre, by contrast, lasted only a few years and was disbanded due to a lack of professional staff. Using a systematic approach, the authors analyze the development of national folk groups. A comparative approach allowed them to compare the specific organization and creative process of two national folk theaters in the Far East. The authors conclude that despite the different existence periods of both folk groups, they were able to introduce regional residents to the specifics of their national art and the work of national writers, becoming part of the region cultural space. Perhaps this is why the idea of creating folk theatres is now being revived.
