Abstract
The article briefly examines the concept of the “new Soviet man” as the foundation for shaping the leisure activities of the USSR population. It is shown that the value system enshrined in the Moral Code of the Builder of Communism did not propose fundamentally new ideas but rather served as a logical continuation and formalisation of an already established concept. Domestic and foreign literature is analysed to substantiate the relevance of studying the proposed topic. The aim of the study is a comprehensive examination of the mechanisms for transmitting the Soviet worldview through the cultural and leisure activities of the urban population of the Lower Volga region during the mid‑1950s‑1960s (using the examples of Stalingrad (Volgograd) and Astrakhan). Based on an analysis of the Moral Code of the Builder of Communism, three areas of leisure activities are identified: ideological-patriotic, moral-personal, and collectivist-social. Drawing on archival data and periodicals, the key practices of organising free time are analysed, including lectures, themed evenings, excursion activities, and mass events organised by trade unions and the Komsomol. It is demonstrated that leisure during the period under study served as a tool for transmitting Soviet values, fostering the “new man”, and consolidating collectives.
