Abstract

This article is devoted to the analysis of the key methodological aspects of teaching Business English to university students emphasizing the translation of international commercial contracts. In the context of globalization and the expansion of international cooperation, proficiency in Business English becomes not only a competitive advantage but also a professional requirement for future specialists. Special attention is paid to the linguistic features of contract documents, among which the following ones are highlighted: the abundance of highly specialized legal and economic terminology, extensive use of abbreviations, clichés, phrasal verbs, as well as lexical units of formal style. The article provides specific examples of such linguistic units and demonstrates their influence on the contract structure and content. The author has developed a specialized practical manual titled “Language of Contracts” which includes tasks for comparing texts, analyzing vocabulary, working with case studies, and business games. These tasks contribute to the development of stable translation skills, a deep understanding of the structure and terminology of contracts, as well as fostering learning autonomy and conscious learning among students. It is emphasized that a teacher needs to combine a high level of linguistic and subject-­matter competence with a coaching approach aimed at developing students’ independence, motivation, and readiness for real professional challenges. The article also considers modern methodological innovations, such as a learner-­centered class and case study, which allow simulating business communication situations and developing in students the skills of teamwork, decision-­making, and intercultural communication.
