Abstract
This article attempts to examine the current approaches that dominate Western historiography and socio-political thought in assessing the victory of the anti-Hitler coalition over German Nazism. Using the historical and cultural method, the author argues that significant changes have occurred in the West over the past two decades, leading to a shift away from previous assessments. Foreign researchers and the ruling political elite have been promoting a dogma that emphasizes the crucial role played by the United States and its close allies in defeating Nazism. In the countries of the European Union (EU), a large-scale campaign has been launched to revise the history of World War II in favor of the geopolitical interests of the so-called “free world,” with a focus on downplaying the role of the Soviet Union in achieving victory over Nazi Germany. The author views the history of the war and Western researchers’ assessments of the USSR’s role in the victory as a phenomenon of politics and culture. Based on an analysis of foreign sources, as well as previously unpublished documents from the Central Archives of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation (TsAMO), the article reveals the inconsistency and bias of Western historiography and socio-political thought in their assessments of the USSR’s contribution to the defeat of Nazism. The paper provides a description of the double standards policy of the United States, England, France, and Poland in their relations with Germany and the Soviet Union in the 1930s and during World War II, a topic that remains taboo in Western historiography. The author concludes with specific conclusions and suggestions that could counteract the attempts of Western opponents to falsify the history of World War II.
