Abstract
This article examines the development of maps and cartographic products through the lens of the most significant surviving artifacts. It outlines key trends in map design, from the earliest examples to contemporary solutions. The design of cartographic products is analyzed in terms of artistic and stylistic techniques, as well as the materials employed. The study provides a structured understanding of the relevance of map design approaches for contemporary users, taking into account historically conditioned artistic trends and their relationship to scientific and technological progress. The identification of the visual and practical value of graphic and content-related techniques in the evolution of maps, from the standpoint of modern design, constitutes the main contribution and novelty of this research. The subject of the study is the stages in the development of tourist and other maps from antiquity to the present day. The research hypothesis is that changes in knowledge about the world lead to transformations in cartographic representations. The modern interpretation of tourist maps is grounded in extensive historical experience, and the incorporation of references to historical design solutions ensures a continuous and evolutionarily consistent line of development. The aim of the study is to examine the existing body of maps, analyze their material and structural characteristics, and identify key trends in their further development and practical application. The research methodology includes the analysis of academic and journalistic sources, as well as visual materials from open internet resources. The study is relevant to the design of contemporary cartographic, topographic, tourist, and game-related products, both custom-made and mass-produced, and is also intended for a general audience.
