The museum center “Digital Collection” for storing digital photos, videos, and audio files will be created at the National Museum of the Komi Republic. Initially, it will include the museum’s memorial collections and the archives of ethnographers, but in the future, collections of historical photography and others are also being considered.
Storing digital museum collections is a long‑overdue problem that is being discussed at many scientific conferences of museum professionals. Currently, large archives are being delivered to the museum in digital form. “In the automated museum system KAMIS, which is used by many large museums, we plan to create a new division — our museum center ‘Digital Collection,’ which will store audio, video, and photo files. We hold public lectures, and often the information presented is exclusive — and it’s also important to preserve it. Our new museum center ‘Digital Collection’ will also serve this purpose,” the museum’s director, Svetlana Bandura, told TASS.
Initially, the ‘Digital Collection’ will include memorial collections and archives of ethnographers, but in the future, it may also include collections of historical photographs of Syktyvkar and the Komi Republic. When creating a digital collection, museum staff plan to use the experience of one of the leading Russian museums — Rosfoto — in terms of attribution and description of photographs.
The National Museum of the Komi Republic was founded in 1911 and is celebrating its 115th anniversary this year. Five museum buildings are located in the historical part of Syktyvkar; the exhibitions introduce the traditional culture, history, nature, and literature of the region.
